Take your summer to the next level by exploring other regions of Canada, initiating community service projects, and experiencing Canada’s cultural and social diversity. Youth Exchanges Canada (YEC) is a group reciprocal exchange program for groups of 10 to 30 participants between the ages of 12 and 17. Participants are twinned with a same-age group from another province or territory, and they take turns staying in each other’s communities for at least five days.

To give you an idea of what to expect, we talked with Cameron, Lagan, and Sara, former YEC participants and members of our Exchanges Youth Advisory Committee about their experiences in the program.

Groups organize activities for their twin group visiting the exchange as a team. In the process, they build deeper relationships with each other and their communities. Cameron traveled from Belle Island, Newfoundland to Orillia, Ontario. He tells us that the exchange helped him learn more about working as a team, instilling confidence in his leadership abilities, and learning how each individual can be a leader in their own way.

Groups can be twinned with a number of communities across the country. Lagan journeyed from Toronto, Ontario to Arviat, Nunavut, where she says she learned so much from her twin group about their home and their culture. “It was amazing to see how the kids from Arviat are so respectful of their Elders and value all of their resources so much,” she says. “This exchange has made me more aware of the beauty of Canada, and how they are so many different cultures within just one country.”

For some participants, it may be their first time away from home, making this an excellent opportunity to experience something completely new. “The first thing that I learned was that it’s really important to put yourself out there, and to get out of your comfort zone,” says Sara, who traveled to Belle Island, Newfoundland. “I really recommend it to anybody who is looking for fun challenges, to learn more about their country, and to make new friends. It is to this day, and always will be, an experience that I will remember.”

Échanges jeunesse Canada (EJC) est un échange réciproque conçu pour des groupes de 10 à 30 participants âgés de 12 à 17 ans. Les participants sont jumelés avec des groupes de participants du même âge, provenant d’une autre territoire ou province, et séjournent à tour de rôle dans leurs communautés respectives pour un minimum de cinq jours.

Nous avons parlé avec des anciens participants du Comité consultatif des jeunes à propos de leurs expériences avec le programme EJC, pour vous donner un aperçu d’un tel échange.

Les groupes organisent des activités pour l’autre groupe qui visite. Durant ce temps, ils développent des relations et amitiés plus profondes entre personnes et communautés. Cameron a voyagé de Bell Island, Terre-Neuve à Orillia, Ontario. Il nous dit que durant l’échange, il a développé des compétences en travail d’équipe et leadership, et il a appris comment toute personne peut être un leader à sa façon.

Les groupes peuvent être jumelés avec une diversité de régions à travers le Canada. Lagan, qui a voyagé de Toronto, Ontario à Arviat, Nunavut, nous dit qu’elle a beaucoup appris de son groupe à propos de leur communauté et leur culture. Elle dit que « c’était incroyable d’apprendre comment les jeunes d’Arviat sont si respectueux de leur aînés et valorisent leur ressources. Cette échange a ouvert mes yeux à la beauté du Canada et la diversité des cultures dans ce pays. »

Pour certain participants, ceci peut être une des premières fois qu’ils quittent la maison. Alors, ceci présente une belle opportunité d’essayer quelque chose de nouveau. Sara, qui a voyagé à Bell Island, Terre-Neuve nous dit que ”la première chose que j’ai appris, c’est l’importance de ce mettre hors de ma zone de confort et de se pousser un petit peu. Je recommande cet échange à n’importe quelle personne qui cherche des défis amusants, qui veut en apprendre plus sur le Canada, et qui désire rencontrer des nouveaux amis. Jusqu’à date, l’échange est, et continuera à être, une expérience que je n’oublierais jamais.”
