8 years ago, Canada learned about a solider who was like many of us, living an ordinary life, until they died under extraordinary circumstances while at war. The soldier has also made a couple of historic firsts during their time in battle: the first artillery officer to call in support fire on an enemy since the Korean War (1950-1953), the first female combat soldier to lead Canadian soldiers into combat–and the first female combat soldier to lose her life to enemy fire.
Nichola Goddard was born in 1980 in Madang, Papua New Guinea, where her parents were teaching at the time. Once the family returned home to Canada, the Goddards lived in many parts of the country, from Lac la Ronge, Saskatchewan, to Antigonish, Nova Scotia, where Nichola went to high school. She loved to participate in many sports activities, like cross country, skiing and running, even competing in many biathlon events. When she joined the Canadian Armed Forces, serving in Princess Patricia’s Light Infantry, her goal was always to help others overseas.
Valour Canada writes of the day that Goddard lost her life in battle in Afghanistan:
Captain Goddard performed with distinction throughout that day, her calm and collected voice coolly calling out coordinates for her regiment’s 155mm artillery pieces and the American Apache helicopters overhead. Her reassuring presence, though sensed by most only via the radio, and unique role as the only forward observation officer in the area, no doubt played a large role in ensuring her troops’ confident performance. By the evening of the 17th, the Canadian and ANA forces had succeeded in checking the Taliban insurgents, killing forty and capturing twenty with the only casualties being an ANA soldier…and Captain Nichola Goddard.
Once Canada learned of her death, tributes came pouring in from across the country to her parents and 2 sisters. Since Nichola died in 2006, a few prominent things have been done, both by her family and from various individuals and organizations across the country, to commemorate her service to Canada while in Afghanistan:
-The Canadian Forces awarded Goddard (posthumously) the Meritorious Service Medal and the Sacrifice Medal;
-One of 9 new Mid-shore Patrol Vessels of the Canadian Forces is named after Goddard in her memory– the CGCS Captain Goddard M.S.M;
-In Calgary, Alberta, a school has been named after Goddard (Captain Nichola Goddard School);
-The Trews, a Canadian rock band whose members attended high school with Goddard, wrote a song dedicated to her in 2010 called Highway of Heroes.
Nichola Goddard is a Hero of History, not because she accomplished many firsts in her death, but because she was just like us, exploring and discovering Canada (and the world) while learning and helping others.

School’s almost out and it’s time to start looking at what you want to hit up this summer. There’s so much to do and so much to see, amirite?! That’s where I come in! I’m here to give you all the nitty- gritty on what you want to see and do this summer across Canada.
So without further ado, here’s my list, in no particular order:
Bringing the best of jazz music and musicians since the 1970s, this is one of Canada’s oldest and biggest Jazz festivals, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. The Festival hosts some 30 countries, 3,000 musicians and public entertainers, 1,000 concerts and activities—two-thirds of them free – in 15 concert halls and on 8 outdoor stages, welcoming more than 2 million visitors to the city, from noon to midnight!There are so many artists playing, it’s totally worth checking out this summer!
Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the Kempt Short Acoustic Music Festival( also called the Acoustic Maritime Music Festival combines local and national musicians with the scenery of the Nova Scotian coast, making for a chill summer trip. There are many genres of music featured during the festival weekend including open mics, and guitar and song writing workshops.
Listed in La Presse’s top 5 must-see events in Quebec, this festival is a huge party that brings musicians and circus acts together. This event is held every summer at the heart of downtown Baie-Saint-Paul, and presents some 40 spectacular music shows on over eight different sites.
Food from around the world, awesome music, cultural exploration, and art demonstrations, and 100,000 of your closest friends to enjoy it with—and all for a free.99? Welcome to the Surrey Fusion festival, where you can enjoy all of the above in two jam-packed days this summer. If you happen to be in the area during your exchange this summer, why not check it out?

Comme l’école est presque finie, c’est le moment de commencer à penser à ce que vous voulez faire cet été. Il y a tellement de choses à faire et à voir, non?! C’est là où j’entre en jeu! Je suis ici pour vous présenter l’essentiel de ce que vous pouvez faire et voir cet été au Canada.
Sans plus tarder, voici ma liste, qui n’est présentée dans aucun ordre particulier :
Consacré par le Guinness World Records comme le festival de jazz le plus important de la planète et l’un des plus anciens, le Festival réunit depuis les années 1970 les plus grands musiciens et le meilleur de la musique jazz. Le Festival compte la présence de près de 30 pays, 3 000 musiciens et amuseurs publics, 1 000 concerts, activités et animations – dont les 2/3 gratuits –, une quinzaine de scènes intérieures et huit scènes extérieures, et reçoit plus de 2 millions de visites. Ouvert de midi à minuit, il y a tellement d’artistes à l’œuvre que ça en vaut vraiment le coup d’y aller cet été!

If there’s one thing Canadians love, it’s a holiday. As the May long weekend is finally approaching, the fact that it’s the unofficial start of summer makes it that much more exciting that school is almost over, and summer adventures can begin (especially if you’re going with us on one of our programs!). Whether you celebrate Victoria Day, Patriots’ Day or just the fact that you don’t have to go to school or work one less day next week, here are some things that you and your fellow Canadians might be up to.
1) Celebrating Queen Victoria’s birthday. For many Canadians, Victoria Day, the third Monday in May, is a huge birthday party only second to that of Canada’s in honour of Queen Victoria, who ruled the British Commonwealth from 1837-1901. In Victoria, British Columbia (yep, it was named after the Queen), the annual Victoria Day parade has been taking place for the last 116 years, and is the longest-running Victoria Day parade in Canada.
2) Whale Watching in Tadoussac, QC. The May long weekend is the start of whale watching season for those who are lucky enough to get to coastal towns like Tadoussac. People from all over Canada come to see a glimpse of the resident belugas as they make the St. Lawrence their summer hangout.
3) Hanging out at Paddlefest. St. Andrew’s, New Brunswick gets woken up for the summer each year by the thousands of people who descend on the resort town to attend Paddlefest, a festival that celebrates outdoor recreation, music and art. Many of the activities, including mountain biking, hiking, kayaking and canoeing, are offered for free…and who doesn’t like free stuff?!
4) Celebrating Patriots’ Day. In Quebec, the May long weekend is Patriots’ Day, created by the Quebec government in 2003, which recognizes the “importance of the struggle of the patriots of 1837-1838 for the national recognition of our people, for its political liberty and to obtain a democratic system of government”. Patriots’ Day was previously known as the “Fete du Dollard”, which honoured military hero Adam Dollard des Ormeaux.
5) Getting robbed on a train in Manitoba. Now before you click away, hear us out. The Prairie Dog Central Railway is one of the oldest running vintage trains in North America, and the Victoria Day long weekend is the start of their Great Train Robbery show, where volunteers dressed up as 1860s-era cowboys and cowgirls round up train passengers for a pretty cool ride in 19th-century Canada.
6) Dancing out Canada’s history. The songs and dances of Canada’s First Nations tell a story while bringing people together and teaching others about Canada’s history. The Native Canadian Centre of Toronto holds pow wow dance classes most weekends that are open to everyone, and Victoria Day weekend is no exception.

S’il y a une chose que les Canadiens adorent, c’est bien les jours de congé. La fin de semaine prolongée de mai approche enfin et cette année, elle coïncide avec le début officieux de l’été, ce qui rend encore plus appréciable le fait que l’école est presque finie et la promesse des aventures estivales (surtout si vous participez à l’un de nos programmes!). Que vous célébriez la fête de Victoria, la Journée nationale des Patriotes ou que vous soyez simplement contents d’avoir une journée de cours ou de travail en moins la semaine prochaine, voici quelques activités pour vous et vos compatriotes.
1) Fêter l’anniversaire de la reine Victoria. Pour de nombreux Canadiens, la fête de Victoria, le troisième lundi du mois de mai, est une grande fête d’anniversaire surpassée uniquement par la fête du Canada et célébrée en l’honneur de la reine Victoria, qui a régné sur le Commonwealth de 1837 à 1901. À Victoria, en Colombie-Britannique (oui, la ville a été nommée d’après la reine), la parade annuelle de la fête de Victoria se déroule depuis 116 ans et est ainsi la parade la plus ancienne du Canada pour cette occasion.
2) Observer les baleines à Tadoussac, au Québec. La fin de semaine prolongée du mois de mai marque le début de la saison d’observation des baleines pour ceux qui ont la chance de se rendre dans des villes côtières comme Tadoussac. On vient de partout au Canada pour apercevoir les bélugas qui fréquentent les eaux du St Laurent en été.
3) Se rendre au Paddlefest. La ville côtière de St. Andrews, au Nouveau-Brunswick, se réveille chaque été avec l’arrivée de milliers de personnes pour le Paddlefest, un festival qui met à l’honneur les activités de plein air, la musique et l’art. De nombreuses activités, y compris le vélo tout terrain, la randonnée, le kayak et le canotage, sont offertes gratuitement… et qui n’aime pas les activités gratuites?!
4) Célébrer la Journée nationale des Patriotes. Au Québec, la longue fin de semaine de mai s’appelle la Journée nationale des Patriotes, créée par le gouvernement québécois en 2003 pour « souligner l’importance de la lutte des patriotes de 1837-1838 pour la reconnaissance de leur nation, pour sa liberté politique et pour l’établissement d’un gouvernement démocratique ». La Journée nationale des Patriotes s’appelaient auparavant la « Fête du Dollard », en l’honneur du héros militaire Adam Dollard des Ormeaux.
5) Se faire voler dans un train au Manitoba. Avant de quitter cette page, lisez ce qui suit. Le Prairie Dog Central Railway est l’un des trains en circulation les plus anciens en Amérique du Nord et la fin de semaine prolongée de la fête de Victoria marque le début du spectacle Great Train Robbery (le grand cambriolage). Des volontaires se déguisent en cow-boys et cow-girls des années 1860 et rassemblent les passagers du train pour une virée originale dans le Canada du 19e siècle.
6) Danser pour célébrer l’histoire du Canada. Les chants et les danses des Premières nations canadiennes racontent une histoire, tout en rassemblant les gens et en enseignant l’histoire canadienne. Le Native Canadian Centre of Toronto offre des cours de danse de pow-wow ouverts à tous la plupart des fins de semaine et la fin de semaine de la fête de Victoria ne fait pas exception.
