Communities in Focus: Dresden, ON and Inukjuak, QC |Des communautés sous la loupe: Dresden, ON et Inukjuak, QC

In spring 2014, a group of students from Dresden, Ontario went to Inukjuak, Quebec for a week-long exchange that saw friendships made, new areas of Canada explored and memories made for a lifetime. Katelyn, one of the students from Dresden, writes about her experience for us.

En printemps 2014, une groupe d’étudiants de Dresden, Ontario, sont voyagés a Inukjuak, Quebec pour 6 jours. Ils ont fait des amis, ils ont exploré de nouveux parties du Canada, et ils ont creé des mémoires qui durent le long de leur vie. Katelyn, une des étudiants de Dresden, decrit son expérience pour nous.

During the week of March 30th to April 5th, I went with 14 other students up to the northern Quebec village of Inukjuak. While I was there, I saw and learned about a part of Canada that I didn’t know about before. The experience was amazing. The history about Inukjuak and the Inuit people was really interesting. I did so many things up in Inukjuak that i would have never gotten the chance to do in Dresden. I got to watch an igloo being built, I got to ice fish, I got to dogsled, I saw some Inuit Games demonstrations, and I saw the beauty of Inukjuak. The people in Inukjuak are very kind and were very welcoming to all of us “Dresden-Miut”(meaning those from Dresden).

I made some friends up in Inukjuak that weren’t on the exchange, and I still keep in contact with them. While I was up in Inukjuak, I got to try some of the food that they eat up there. I actually really liked caribou meat. I think I learned a lot more about Canada that I didn’t know before. I learned about the relocation of the Inuit people, and how they lived before everything they have now. A part that I thought was cool was that most of the people in Inukjuak ride ski-doos everywhere. That was awesome.

I think that Canada is an amazing country, with a mixture of people and climate. You could fly north to experience the cold, then fly south to experience the heat. The history that is based off of the Inuit people is really cool and interesting to learn about. I would love to go back up to Inukjuak, and I plan on going back up in the future, more than once. This exchange has helped me make friendships with people who are in a different part of Canada, and I will keep those friendships for as long as I live.

Pendant la semaine du 30 mars au 5 avril, je suis allée, avec 14 autres étudiants, au village d’Inukjuak dans le Nord du Québec. Durant mon séjour, je vu une partie du Canada qui m’était alors inconnue et j’en ai beaucoup appris sur celle-ci. L’expérience était géniale. L’histoire d’Inukjuak et du peuple inuit était très intéressante. À Inukjuak, j’ai fait une foule de choses que je n’aurais jamais eu la chance de faire à Dresden. J’ai assisté à la construction d’un igloo, j’ai fait de la pêche sous la glace et du traîneau à chiens, j’ai vu des démonstrations de sports inuits et j’ai pu apprécier la beauté d’Inukjuak. Les habitants du village sont très aimables et ont été très accueillants pour nous tous « Dresden-Miut » (ce qui signifie « ceux de Dresden »).

Je me suis fait des amis à Inukjuak qui ne faisaient pas partie de l’échange, et je suis toujours en contact avec eux. Pendant mon séjour à Inukjuak, j’ai pu goûter à la nourriture locale. J’ai vraiment aimé le caribou. Je crois que je connais beaucoup plus le Canada qu’avant. J’en ai appris sur la réinstallation d’Inuit et sur la façon dont vivait le peuple inuit avant d’avoir tout ce qu’il a maintenant. J’ai adoré le fait que la majorité des habitants d’Inukjuak se promènent en motoneige partout. C’était génial.

Je pense que le Canada est un pays merveilleux, où l’on trouve une diversité de peuples et de climats. On peut aller au Nord où il fait froid, puis au Sud où il fait chaud. L’histoire qui porte sur le peuple inuit est super intéressante à apprendre. J’aimerais retourner à Inukjuak, et j’ai l’intention de le faire dans l’avenir, plus d’une fois. Cet échange m’a permis de nouer des amitiés avec des personnes vivant dans une autre région du Canada, et je garderai ces amitiés aussi longtemps que je vivrai.
